Browsing the prints

Browsing the prints

The last days, I've been browsing the prints here at DA. I need some stuff to cover my walls, and as I'm 30 years old, I can't have "Student crossing" or anything retarded like that. And I also have money burning in my pockets.

I have to say that browsing the prints is probably the best way to browse Deviant Art. It's the créme de la créme of the pictures in here, and I've added a lot of the artists to my devwatch, so that I can keep an eye on what they make.
Can't say for sure if I will buy anything, but I reckon that if I'm buying any prints on the net, it will be here. (It's not too easy to find the best pieces by good old artists like Brueghel and Bosch)

Also, I've opened up a print account myself. Mainly, to be able to have prints made for myself of my own stuff. The images I make are made for papers and magazines, so every week someone throws my art in the trash... Not exactly the way to become eternal!
I therefore want to make prints out of some of them, so that I can hang them on the wall and be proud, without the picture getting yellow after a few months.

A problem with my pictures however, is that they very often lose their value once they get cut out from the article they were printed with. They simply don't make sense outside the context (without explaining at least). This is due to the fact that I take great pride in making the illustration fit the article. To me as an ex-journalist, there's nothing worse than illustrations or photos that don't have anything to do with the article they're supposed to illustrate.
But as I said, once they're out of the context, there's a problem. The humour that was obvious to the editor or journalist that called me and the reader wil have to be explained.
And once they're out of the country, there's another one: when I consider uploading pictures here, not only are the pictures outside the context, but they're also presented to foreigners who know even less about the original context.
I don't think I will sell many prints actually.

At the same time, I feel lucky that I get paid to make this. I currenlty make illustrations for 3 publications in Norway, and today my 6th frontpage will be found in kiosks throughout Norway. I think I must have made 150-200 illustrations in the last 3 years at least that have all (99%) been printed and paid for.
I laugh all the way to the bank etc., but I also hope all of you great artists get good assignments and are able to show off your images outside the net!
You deserve it!
